Which is the best OS for playing games-Win98SE or Win XP?

I have a computer with the following configuration - P III, 733 MHz processor, Samsung hard disk 20 GB with three partitions C, D %26amp; E with 6, 7 %26amp; 7 GB respectively, Samsung floppy disk %26amp; CD ROM (52X), Internal 56 KBPS modem, Windows XP on C: drive. My problems are:

1) My Windows has gone extremely slow. It takes five minutes to boot and another five to shut down. I have defragmented all drives but the problem still remains. Also, I do not see the option of scandisk in the system tools. Please advice.

2) In the system tray, it often comes-"Your Windows is too low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the paging size. During this process, many programs may not function." What is the reason behind this?

3) Which is the best OS for playing games-Win98SE or Win XP.

From the description of your problem it appears you have installed an older version of a program (could be a game) on your computer, which has caused memory leak. This is a classical case of memory leak, which makes the PC very slow while running and often returning the message related to low virtual memory. Now in order to solve this problem, first of all remove this program from your system either through uninstall or through Add remove program in control panel. Do not delete this program manually as it would leave its system entry in the system. Once you have removed this program, restart the system and you will find the change. Also if you are running an older version of an anti-virus program, then either remove it or upgrade it with a new one. I am sure this will solve your problem. Regarding scan disk you can use the error-checking tool to check for file system errors and bad sectors on the hard disk.

1. Open My Computer, and then select the local disk you want to check.

2. On the File menu, click Properties.

3. On the Tools tab, under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4. Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box.

Your problem is related to low virtual memory message, has been addressed in the solutions mentioned above. You can try to manage the virtual memory size yourself by increasing it to higher value e.g. 600 MB etc. Lastly you can also increase the RAM size to 256 MB or higher for better performance. Regarding your query for playing games, Windows XP is a better operating system.
Reply:In your case, go back to SE. You don't begin to have enough horse power to run XPh. SE IS far better for games than XPh. It is much faster, uses less resources, handles open GL better as well as Direct X. Once Microhell gets the bugs out of Longhorn, now to be Vista, XP home is going the way of ME. AND even then there will be those that will stay with SE.
Reply:for your computer windows 98SE
Reply:winxp
Reply:Your partitions are making the drive space too small which is proably causing bad fragmentation problems. YOu also forgot to mention how little memory you have which is another reason.

Your computer, regardless of memory, is the minimum processor that can effectively run XP (without games) and will not play "modern" games such as HL2, FEAR etc. XP is generally better, but for this configuration 98 may be the only choice.
Reply:Win XP %26amp; sounds like u need more RAM ...
Reply:4 urs 98SE is better coz with XP u can expect a lot of hogin
Reply:1) check that you aren't loading lots of programs through the start up folder, do a good virus/spyware sweep to check nothing naughty is being called to run through the registry

2) you have it set to dynamically allocate virtual RAM. Right click 'my computer', choose 'properties' 'advanced' tab, click the settings button under 'performance', then the 'advanced' tab. At the bottom of that box is the button to access change RAM settings---click it. Select C drive and use the 'custom settings' to set both minimumand maximum values to equal the amount of physical RAM + 1 Mb that you have installed. Follow the same procedure to set a paging file equal to the amount of RAM you have on each of the other drives. This will give you loads of virtual memory, more than the recommended in fact, so if you experirnce problems just reduce the settings on all drives EXCEPT C. By setting min and max values to the same, windows doesnt waste time changing settings as its running.

3) For compatability with older games, Win98 is better---but if you want to play the newer games your PC really needs upgrading, not just the operating system as your hard drive is small; and a lot of gaming performance depends on your graphics capability, but as you didnt include that in your specs we cant advise
Reply:WINXP...IS THE BEST FOR EVERYTHING

If u have any other doubts write to me
Reply:Windows 98se

XP requires several specifications for games and pulls at least 1.0 GHZ when playing a game. I recommened that you buy more memory and update your 56k to broadband
Reply:windows xp of course
Reply:I would recommend Windows XP coz there are a lot of performance boosting features in it.
