Already i have paging on C drive but my question is does enabling paging on D drive as well will increase performance of a system?
Increasing paging ( Virtual Memory ) on D drive as well will increase system performance ?
First of all, there is a difference between two drives and two partitions on a single drive. Look into your computer. How many harddrives have you got?
If you have two different physical hard drives then yes, using it on D drive will increase system performance, since there are now two harddrives that can read and write simultaneously(GO TO PART 1)
BUT if you have only one drive, then you shouldn't.(GO TO PART 2).
==PART 1==
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314482
Microsoft explains:
To enhance performance, it is good practice to put the paging file on a different partition and on a different physical hard disk drive.
==PART 2==
If you spread out the page file over different partitions on the SAME drive, then it can decrease the performance of your system because now the page file is fragmented. Your harddisk drive has to look in two locations in C: and D: which makes it slower. (As you know harddisk read fastest when files are contiguous, not apart) For paging files you should choose only ONE partition(C: OR D:).
A larger paging file increases the performance of your pc, you can increase the paging file on C: it will help increase performance when gaming or running demanding applications.
BUT beware when you increase paging files not only will it use up more space, it might cause the entire new page file to be fragmented.(so your pc ends up slower!) To check if the condition of your page file, run disk defragmenter. (Start%26gt;Accessories%26gt;System Tools%26gt;Disk Defragmenter). Analyse the disk where your paging file is located. When it's done look to see if the green files are together. A pagefile is usually together but if you have enlarged it by quite a large margin, the enlarged portion might be fragmented. To make the paging file contiguous, follow this guide:
http://www.windowsdevcenter.com/pub/a/wi...
so in conclusion a larger paging file increases performance on your pc, provided the paging file is together as one chunk!
Reply:I would not suggest or advise doing that because unless you have over a gig of memory (ram) then you might do more damage than harm. I would forget tweaking the options like virtual memory as the OS knows the best way to handle the load.
Reply:You can only have Virtual Memory, on one drive at a time.
Reply:Yes because it increases the total paging file for all drives. If u look on the lower part of the Virtual memory option, you'll see the size of the total paging file for all drives. It is the sum of all the minimum page size you've set in all the drives. Why would microsoft put it there if it had no effect in the system,.... I think this is what they call virtualization. I've heard from my professor in networking that most companies using dual boot processing (a computer with 2 kinds of processors running at the same time) use ram of both to produce huge size of virtual memory. I did what YOU did in my pc... and its working well
