My pc runs increadibly slow now for some reason and I can't figure out why! Someone told me that it can be memory. Here's my memory:
This is what it says in my C box: 1536-3072
I have 1gb of RAM on my pc.
I've done disk defrags, cleanups. I've removed extra programs I don't use from my C drive. I run virus/spyware removal programs. I unselected all of the start up programs, there are no extra programs running. I've tried other programs that are supposed to increase performance but to no avail.
These are my pc stats:
Windows XP
Service Pack 2
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
3400+
1.81 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS video card
Creative SB X-Fi Audio sound card
Can either less memory or low Virtual Memory make my pc slow?
I run 1 Gig on my laptop and 2 gigs in my desktop which is pretty much the same system you have. No problems, though I did notice that my desktop was taking forever to boot.
The problem was that every time I loaded a program it wanted to start up at boot and remain resident in the system tray.
Go to Start =%26gt;Run =%26gt;type msconfig. You'll get a tabbed screen. Go to Start Up and see how many of those programs really need to be loaded. Probably only a FEW.
You can also Run =%26gt;chkdsk /f ( with the space) and that will fix any errors it finds.
You can also try cleaning out your registry.

When you uninstall programs they often leave registry entries that no longer apply to anything, and then there are a bunch of keys that are simply not used.
Unfortunately the unused entries seem to continue popping up. LOL
You can set your pagefile to a set value and your system will open up that space when you boot. This eliminates the need for the OS to compensate on the fly. Generally about 1.5x the Ram.
I believe this processor also has a dual channel memory controller, so you want to balance your ram with an equal amount in each slot. I believe you should be running PC 3200. You can get a free scan here: http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/
Another free service is provided by Secunia. http://secunia.com/software_inspector/ It checks all your programs for updates, though some software programs like DreamWeaver are going to have multiple copies of Flash for instance, and you can't upgrade entries like that.
Good Luck
Reply:Need more info
memory type pc2700 pc3200
hard drive type PATA SATA and drive speed, is the drive almost full.
do you have programs that run in the backround that are memory taxing.
did you upgrade to a new operating system. Vista needs at least 2 gigs
and norton 2007 will slow you way down unless you have a couple gigs of good fast ram.
go to pvazpc.com and download everest home edition to see
what exactly you have in your system.
and send an e-mail to rob asking for someadvice on the problem. http://www.pvazpc.com
Reply:That should be quite a fast computer, not like lightning but quite fast. More RAM than 1Gb will not make much difference to XP. Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt +Del) and look at the processes to find out what's taking your processing power.
Reply:It could be your registry! Have you tried cleaning your registry with this excellent tool? TuneUp Util - fully working trial version for download from:
